March 18, 2020

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

If you have not seen already, Gov. Brown has mandated that no public group over 25 people will meet for the next 4 weeks, starting March 17th. If this mandate is maintained, it will cover Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

This order has been given to promote the health of the general public, especially so that medical resources will not be overtaxed during the pandemic (as they have in other countries). After discussing this with the Elders, we will be suspending holding gatherings for worship at St. John Lutheran Church until larger gatherings are allowed.

As a church, we are deeply concerned for the well-being of our congregation, both in body and in spirit. We recognize that Gov. Brown is asking us to care for the bodies of our neighbors through this order. I also recognize as your Pastor that we want to continue the care for your souls during this time. For that, we will be doing the following.

  1. We will continue broadcasting services, slightly modified while having almost nobody in the building. They will be made available through the website (both as a live-stream and archived video) and through public access television (as long as they're able to operate as well).
  2. We will be distributing the sacrament to all members on each Sunday, from the hours of noon-1 p.m. We will serve people at or near the curb, so that people will be able to receive Christ's body and blood with minimal contact.
    1. Both the common cup and individual cups will be made available, while extra space will be made available between cups on the tray so that cross-contamination will be limited.
    2. Pastor will wash and/or sanitize his hands between cars
  3. Weekday services (Lenten Wednesday services) are cancelled. A decision will be made soon concerning Holy Week services, and that decision will be announced at the March 29th service broadcast.

4.     For any of those able to continue sending offerings, we will still have staff who are checking the mail. If you mail in offerings, they will be brought in and attributed to your contributions for the year You can also contribute through Joyful Response (see attached sheets) or through a direct deposit arrangement with your bank. (Note: The attached sheets about Joyful Response are in PDF format. If you need assistance with these or are unable to print copies, please call the office. )

5.     You can contact Pastor Knutson with any needs through his email or phone. (509)-868-9911 or pastor@stjohnmac.org

God bless you all as you live under the cross of our Savior.  Use this as an opportunity to reconnect with the family of your flesh and the family of your spirit.
